RIVOLI CASTLE - MUSEUM OF CONTEMPORARY ART
Spectacular castle housing several levels of collections and temporary exhibitions of contemporary art.
This spectacular castle, which belonged to the House of Savoy from the 13th century onwards, has long been a military fortress. In 1563, the castle became the first seat of the court of the Duke of Savoy, who then decided to transfer the capital of his duchy from Chambéry to Turin. Filippo Juvarra, who arrived in Turin in 1715, designed the palace as a new symbol of the absolute power of Vittorio Amedeo II, who became King of Sicily and then King of Sardinia. Originally the residence of the Dukes of Aosta, then transformed into barracks in the 19th century, the castle was restored in the second half of the 20th century and opened to the public. An essential royal residence, listed as a World Heritage Site by Unesco in 1997 along with the other Savoy residences, the castle is also part of history as the very first museum of contemporary Italian art, inaugurated in 1984, and still one of the most prestigious in Europe today. Works by world-famous artists can be admired here. It's interesting to note that the site has long been a repository for works of art, notably with the construction of the Manica Lunga in 1630. Intended as an art gallery, which is what it is today, it houses collections and temporary exhibitions of contemporary art on several levels. At Castello di Rivoli, the cohabitation between the ultra-contemporary and the past is, in fact, very harmonious.
