CASTELLO DI IVREA
Castle transformed into a prison in the 18th century by important restoration works.
The red towers of Ivrea castle remain famous because they were sung about by the 19th-century poet Giosuè Carducci, the first Italian author to win the Nobel Prize for Literature. Carducci was struck by their imposing, proud appearance. Erected in 1358 by Amédée VI of Savoy, the château has a square plan flanked by four towers. Transformed into a prison in the 18thcentury , it retained this function until 1970. Extensive restoration work subsequently restored it to its original appearance.
