DUCAL CASTELLO DI AGLIÈ
Very well preserved castle with incredible heritage collections.
The setting of Agliè Castle, north of Turin, about 30 kilometers from the capital, in the heart of the Canavese region, is splendid with the Alps in the background. The German landscape architect Xavier Kurten worked here, as he did in Turin for the Royal Gardens and the Villa della Regina, also in Pollenzo, and for the parks of the castles of Govone and Racconigi, among others, with his characteristic style of early 19th century Romanticism. The castle, an ancient fortress of the XII century, was built between 1642 and 1657 thanks to the design of the great architect Amedeo di Castellamonte. It was acquired quite late by the House of Savoy, in 1763, and it is from that time onwards that it was extensively fitted out, embellished, in a refined style. The building was redesigned several times in the 18th and 19th centuries before reaching its present elegant appearance. The façade of the castle opens onto the central square of the ancient village of Agliè. Inside this spectacular building, and very well preserved too, more than three hundred rooms are decorated with marble, gilding, frescoes, paintings and contain incredible heritage collections... King Charles Felix of Savoy even had a personal theater built in the palace, the teatrino. And what about the ballroom? It is just great!
