CHIESA DELLA MISSIONE
Jesuit church entirely covered with frescoes with angels and saints.
A Jesuit church dedicated to St. Francis Xavier, it was built by Boetto between 1665 and 1678. Entrusted to the missionary fathers of Saint-Vincent-de-Paul, it became known as the "Church of the Mission". The interior is a remarkable example of Baroque architecture. The entirely frescoed vault is the work of Pozzo (1642-1709), with angels and saints twirling in a classicist decor. The scene of the baptism of Queen Neachile by Francis Xavier in the apse, and that of the saint in glory in the dome, in trompe-l'œil, are highly theatrical.
