CASTELLO DEL MONFERRATO
Imposing castle transformed into a cave having lost a part of its decorations.
Built in the 14th century, the imposing castle has been reopened to the public after extensive restoration work. Intended around 1350 by Giovanni II Paleologo, Marquis of Monferrato, its construction symbolized the family's supremacy over Casale. Situated in a dominant position, the building was altered several times until it finally adopted its hexagonal plan. In the hands of the Savoys, the castle became a barracks and lost some of its decorative features. Reinforced during the wars for Italian Unity, it was not until 1858 that one of the moats was filled in to form Piazza Castello.
