FORTE DI GAVI
A majestic military building with a written document that certifies the presence of a castle.
A majestic military structure, the Gavi fort overlooks the town. A written document attests to the presence of a castle on this site in 973. Over the centuries, the structure underwent a series of alterations until, in the 17th century, it took on its current appearance, as intended by the Genoese (who had been masters of the area since the 12th century) to control the strategic trade route linking the Ligurian coast to the Po plain. In 1848, the bastions were used as a prison until the end of the Second World War.
