SANTUARIO DI OROPA
Sanctuary with 3 esplanade terraces with a statue of the Black Madonna
Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Oropa is one of Europe's oldest sanctuaries. Dedicated to the Marian cult, its strategic position made it an essential point of passage to France and northern Europe. Pilgrims used to stop here to pray to the statue of the Black Madonna (13th century) before undertaking the perilous ascent. Spread over three esplanade terraces, the complex is built around two poles: the old basilica (1600-1620), the spiritual heart of the sanctuary which preserves the Black Madonna, and the new church (1885-1960).
