ABBAZIA SAN NAZZARO SESIA
Benedictine abbey with a curious long and narrow narthex on 2 floors.
This Benedictine abbey is one of the few examples of a fortified abbey in Northern Italy. Founded in 1040, its current appearance is due to the redevelopment of the 15th century. A curious narthex erected between 1125 and 1150 precedes the façade of the church: long and narrow, on two floors, it surrounds the square, bordered by a gallery of arcades. Inside the church there are beautiful frescoes with characters represented in knightly vestments, as was the custom in the 15th century.
