TAR MUSEUM OF MODERN ART
Greece's oldest museum of contemporary art, founded in 1979 by the Goulandris family. Very pleasant, but closed from November to May.
This prestigious museum of modern and contemporary art (Μουσείο Σύγχρονης Τέχνης Άνδρος/Mousio Synchronis Technis Andros) was the first to open in Greece. Established in 1979, it belongs to the Goulandris Foundation, which since 2019 also manages the Goulandris Museum in Athens. Terraced along an alleyway leading down to Nimborio beach, the elegant, discreet white building was originally designed around the works of Andros sculptor Michalis Tombros (1889-1974). A second wing was added in 1986 to house other pieces from the collection of shipowner Vassilis Goulandris (1913-1994) and his wife Elizas (1917-2000). A native of the village, Vassilis Goulandris was also behind the nearby Archaeological Museum. Here, in the Museum of Contemporary Art, the mainly Greek works in the Goulandris collection change regularly. These include installations by Takis and Kounellis, paintings by Fassianos and Ghikas, and more recent creations by sculptor Alexandra Athanasiadi (b. 1961). Each season (July-October), the museum also hosts an exhibition highlighting an artistic movement or artist from the 19th or 20th centuries. Superb retrospectives have been devoted to Matisse, Kandinsky, Giacometti, Klee, Chagall, Braque, Mirό, Rodin and Toulouse-Lautrec. The establishment has a bookshop, a store and a pleasant café with terrace overlooking Nimborio Bay.
