Amorgos is famous for its beautiful hikes and its rugged terrain. Among all the possible walks, the path n°1 is a must that we highly recommend. Difficult, it follows the road of the crests which crosses all the northern part of the island, between Chora and Aegiali. This 5-hour walk, which is splendid and offers endless breathtaking views to the east and west, starts from Chora and makes a first stop at the monastery of Hozoviotissa. We recommend that you reserve the visit to the monastery for another time so as not to fall behind on your walk and avoid the hottest hours. Beyond the monastery, the path winds its way along the ridge around Mount Profitis Ilias, the highest point of the island with its 700 meters. You will then pass by the church of Panaghia Theoskepasti and the small Byzantine monastery of St. John Chrysostom where you will see the medieval ruins of a military barracks used at the time. The usual precautions apply here as elsewhere: leave early in the morning to avoid the heat, take enough water with you (2 liters per person) and something to snack on, because you will not be able to buy anything on the road, cover up and use a high factor sun protection. Finally, and most importantly, do not go on windy days, as the meltem blows with unprecedented force on these peaks. If you don't want to go back and forth by the same path, take a bus that will bring you back from Aegiali to Chora by the coastal road.
