Monastery suspended on a cliff requiring a correct dress.
This monastery (Μονή Παναγίας Χοζοβιώτισσας), emblematic of the island of Amorgos, is one of the most impressive in Greece and one of the oldest Byzantine constructions in the Cyclades. After admiring it from below, head for the panoramic view. To reach it, take a small path to the right. Go down the path to discover a breathtaking view of the sea and mountains. When you reach the road, turn left as far as the parking lot. This is where you'll discover the incredible monastery. Suspended on a sheer cliff above the sea. This monastery, probably founded in the 9th century, is an interesting architectural feat, representing the equivalent of several storeys and, from a distance, appearing to have only one wall. The story of its foundation has given rise to a number of legends. The most widespread is that an icon of the Virgin Mary painted by the apostle Luke suddenly appeared in a boat. The islanders decided to build a monastery on the coast, but everything they built during the day was demolished the next day. A priest, imploring heaven, suddenly has a vision of a workman's bag hanging from a nail on a steep rock. And so it was decided to build the monastery on this site. Please note: proper dress is required, i.e. long skirts for women, long pants for men and covered shoulders for all. However, skirts and pants are available on loan at the monastery entrance in case you forget to wear Bermuda shorts...
