PANAGHIA HORIANI

In the abandoned village of Paleo Horio, you can visit the ^15th-century Church of the Panaghia, which clings to the rock of the medieval kastro. If you're lucky enough to be around August 15, don't miss the panigyria celebrations given for the Dormition: the day before, the whole island gathers at the port and climbs up to the church dedicated to the Virgin. The forecourt and doors are opened for the occasion, and people feast, sing, eat and dance to the rhythm of the occasion: a spectacle not to be missed, and an opportunity to forge links with the local population.
