Recently renovated museum with a beautiful collection of excavated objects and sculptures
This museum was built in 1934 and beautifully renovated in 2010. It traces the prehistoric and ancient periods of Thassos, through its social organization over the centuries, its rites and religions, its artistic practices ... The section dedicated to the first inhabitants of the island, the Paleolithic and Neolithic, is still a bit old-fashioned, but has the merit of staging some archaeological findings in an approach that will interest the youngest.
The renovated part of the museum focuses on the ancient period, from the colonization of Thassos by the Greeks of Paros, in 680 BC, to the Roman period. Good news: the labels and indications are in French when it comes to excavations carried out by the French School of Athens, present on site since 1911. Take the time to read, to discover what made the wealth of Thassos, its trade, its wine, its oil and its quarries, as well as the urban organization of the ancient Limenas. A section is dedicated to sports rituals and various festivities to celebrate the important deities of the island, including orgiastic celebrations for Dionysus, or feasts in honor of Herakles (Hercules). Among the masterpieces of sculpture, we will stop in front of the impressive kouros of 6 meters (6th century BC) which dominates the entrance. From the floor, you can appreciate its height and its beautiful hair. Also to be seen, the two heads of the school of Skopas (4th century BC).
