TELLICHERRY FORT
A must-see fort, built in 1708 by the British to consolidate their hold, whose solid bastions are still clearly visible
Soon after landing in Kerala for the first time, the British decided to build a fort to establish their hold. The British East India Company completed the construction of this fort in 1708. In 1781, Hyder Ali, the king of Mysore, tried unsuccessfully to capture the fort and had to give up the conquest of the Malabar coast. The British finally conquered the territory after the victory of the Third Anglo-Marathi War in 1792. This fort is imposing and its solid bastions are still clearly visible.
