In 1996, after poachers killed some 50 elephants, camp owners in the area formed the Conservation Lower Zambezi (CLZ), a local complement to the Zambian Wildlife Authority (ZAWA). The CLZ, funded by the lodges, pays for the training and employment of rangers, as well as awareness programs. Today, elephant populations have recovered well, although poaching is not yet completely eradicated.
