MARLBOROUGH FORT
This fort built by the British between 1710 and 1726 owes its name to Sir John Churchill, a general who will mark his time
Built by the British between 1710 and 1726, it was named after Sir John Churchill, Duke of Malborough, a general who left a strong mark on his time. A large part of the fortification is dug out of the rock. The galleries, pits and moats were used to protect the central enclosure. First besieged in 1756 under the orders of the Duke of Richelieu, the fort was occupied by the French until 1763. In 1781, the Spanish army, led by the Duke of Crillón, reconquered the island, which then belonged to the Spanish Crown.
