ARTESANÍAS REINALDO QUIROZ
Hats! Reinaldo Quiroz has had a passion for hats for a long time. He started making them when he was nine years old. Very attached to his job, he tries to revive the old models of some traditional headgear of the country. He makes them himself, but does not participate in the preparation and weaving of the fiber, although he also masters this skill: the selection and treatment, in a natural process, of the leaves of three plants(bellota, junco and pita). The sombrero ocueño (hat from the Ocú region) is completely plain creamy white; others are decorated with a few discreet patterns, using dyes that are also natural. A victim of his success, Reinaldo is invited to many national and even international fairs. He also works with other craftsmen whose work he presents, always of high quality! Prices have been rising in recent years, as many artisans have left to work in the gold mine around La Pintada, while demand is constantly increasing. The pinta'o hat, which has never lost popularity in Panamá, has regained even more prestige since the artisanal process, carried out using five plants and mud, which allows for the production of vegetable fibers for weaving the talcos, crinejas and pintas of the pinta'o, was inscribed on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO in 2017.
