MARY HAREL STATUES
Statues representing Marie Harel, creator of the famous Camembert cheese, stand in front of Vimoutiers town hall.
Marie Harel, creator in 1791 of Camembert’s famous cheese, a few kilometers from Vimoutiers, is one of the local heroines, represented by two statues. As the original lost its head during the US bombing on June 14, 1944, its twin sister was offered compensation by the Pilot Club International. The workers of a cheese factory in Ohio, after having contributed, made this statue to its effigy. It rises in front of the town hall and faces Ratismade, the Norman cow, the brasswork of sculptor Henri Le Bihan, another emblem of the vimonasterial city.
