FORT DE MERDŽAN GLAVA
Small ruined Austro-Hungarian fort facing a field of wind turbines used by the Bosnian-Serbs as an observation and artillery post.
This small ruined Austro-Hungarian fort (Tvrđava Merdžan Glava) offers splendid views of Mostar and the Velež massif. It is placed at 802 m above sea level facing a field of wind turbines, at the entrance to the Podvelež plateau. Built in the 1880s, the building was part of a network of thirty-four fortified points that encircled Mostar to defend the southern border of the Empire. Built of ashlar and fitted with a concrete bunker by the Italians in 1941, the fort served as an observation and artillery post for the Bosnian Serbs during the last war.
