ABBEY BOY
Visit the imposing remains of a former Cistercian abbey founded by monks from Mellifont in Boyle.
Imposing remains of a former 12th century Cistercian abbey founded by monks from Mellifont. Here you will discover the guardhouse, a square tower, the cloister, the kitchens, the refectory, the reading rooms and the abbey church. Despite numerous successive assaults, notably by Oliver Cromwell in 1645, part of Boyle Abbey(Mainistir na Búille in Gaelic) is still standing and retains a great deal of detail on the various capitals (foliage, animals and non-figurative motifs).
