ROSCOMMON CASTLE
Impressive royal castle, built in 1269 by the King of England, with towers, fortified walls and well-preserved windows
Once surrounded by a lake, this impressive royal castle was built in 1269 by the King of England (although he never came to enjoy it!). Now in ruins, Roscommon Castle dominates the north of the eponymous town, and can be visited freely to appreciate its towers, fortified walls and magnificent mullioned windows, perfectly preserved. The former main entrance to the castle is opposite the present entrance; observers will appreciate some of the load-bearing elements of the drawbridge still visible.
