TINTERN ABBEY
Cistercian abbey, one of the most powerful Cistercian foundations in the south-east during the reign of Henry VIII of England
This Cistercian abbey, located on the Hook Head peninsula, was founded in 1200 by William Marshall, then Earl of Pembroke. It was inhabited at the time by Welsh monks, who had previously occupied another Cistercian abbey in Wales (also called Tintern Abbey!), of which William Marshall was also a patron. This abbey was one of the most powerful Cistercian foundations in southeastern Ireland until the monasteries were dissolved in 1536 under the rule of Henry VIII of England.
