CASTELLO EURIALO
Building at the top of the Epipoleius offering a magnificent panoramic view of Syracuse
Located 7 km from Syracuse, it is the most brilliant work of military architecture in the Greek world. Built by Dionysius in the 4th century B.C., the building rises to the top of the Epipoleis, where the north and south sides of the city walls meet. The still visible remains of the mighty complex are the result of alterations during the Byzantine period. Its originality lies in its system of underground passageways, which allowed the rapid movement of troops inside the building. From the top, there is a magnificent panoramic view of Syracuse and the bay.
