RISERVA NATURALE CIANE E SALINE
Natural reserve offering a guided tour to see the valuable archaeological heritage.
The walk in the heart of this reserve little visited by the tourists promises bucolic landscapes of soft green papyrus plants so characteristic on the banks of the rivers Ciane and Saline. But this visit also reserves you the discovery of archaeological remains. However one cannot connect the marine coast via the reserve. Admission is free but a guided tour is recommended to find the right paths and above all to get a glimpse of the extraordinary history of this ancient papyrus! The Greek settlers present in the area since the 8th century BC drained and channelled the river at the time colonized by mosquitoes and malaria. It seems that the papyrus plant, at the time prized for making paper according to the Egyptian technique of cultivation on the Nile, arrived in Syracuse imported in the 3rd century BC, given by an Egyptian king to King Lerone II. Difficult to tame the plant grew here in clear waters. Thanks to the excavations carried out by the archaeologist Paolo Orsi at the end of the 19th century, a precious archaeological heritage was discovered here, as evidenced by the tombs, caves, wells and traces dug by the passage of the wheels, which testify to the presence of one of the oldest "roads" of Magna Graecia (Magna Graecia), linking Syracuse to Heloros, the Greek site near Noto. Contact Villa dei Papiri to book the local guide who will be happy to explain the details of this site in English.
