Refuge with double and triple rooms equipped with a restaurant and a bar

A mythical refuge for volcanologists and mountaineers. Located at 1 900 m of altitude, it is the headquarters of the alpine guides of Etna. It was destroyed by a lava flow and rebuilt. It is at the departure of the gondolas that go up to the summit crater, convenient for an early morning excursion or late at night to go up by gondola. This refuge has 24 double and triple rooms equipped with bathroom and heating, but very basic. There is also a restaurant and bar. Entertainment for parties. It is not disconnected: wifi accessible.

Given that we were traveling through Sicily, we decided to visit Mount Etna as well. The journey to Rifugio Sapienza, where the starting point for crater exploration is located, was picturesque and beautiful. However, when we arrived at the parking area and wanted to purchase one of the crater tour options, we were unpleasantly surprised. The prices were outrageous. The cable car ride costs 50€ per person, and after that ride, you arrive at a place where absolutely nothing can be seen. To reach the main crater, it's necessary to pay an additional 28€ for a bus ride. The ATV ride was also excessively expensive, at 100€ per ATV, and considering there were three of us, it was definitely not worth it.
In the end, we decided to explore a small dormant crater near the parking area, which was free of charge, and we found our decision absolutely correct. We wouldn't have seen anything more or better at other craters anyway, as access to active craters is not allowed. We might have had a slightly better view of the panorama because the other craters are higher, but that view doesn't justify the price they're asking for. In my opinion, it's not worth paying anything extra; seeing the free crater is sufficient to complete the experience. Even one of the employees working there told us the same thing: don't unnecessarily spend so much money on something you can see for free. In any case, it was a beautiful and interesting excursion.

Storico locale/albergo dal quale iniziare "l'ascesa" ai crateri sommitali, ottima la rosticceria nonostante i prezzi da turisti.
