RIFUGIO SAPIENZA
Refuge with double and triple rooms equipped with a restaurant and a bar
A mythical refuge for volcanologists and mountaineers. Located at 1 900 m of altitude, it is the headquarters of the alpine guides of Etna. It was destroyed by a lava flow and rebuilt. It is at the departure of the gondolas that go up to the summit crater, convenient for an early morning excursion or late at night to go up by gondola. This refuge has 24 double and triple rooms equipped with bathroom and heating, but very basic. There is also a restaurant and bar. Entertainment for parties. It is not disconnected: wifi accessible.

In the end, we decided to explore a small dormant crater near the parking area, which was free of charge, and we found our decision absolutely correct. We wouldn't have seen anything more or better at other craters anyway, as access to active craters is not allowed. We might have had a slightly better view of the panorama because the other craters are higher, but that view doesn't justify the price they're asking for. In my opinion, it's not worth paying anything extra; seeing the free crater is sufficient to complete the experience. Even one of the employees working there told us the same thing: don't unnecessarily spend so much money on something you can see for free. In any case, it was a beautiful and interesting excursion.
