CASTAGNO DEI 100 CAVALLI
The most impressive and oldest known chestnut tree in Europe
It is the most impressive and oldest known chestnut tree in Europe, aged between 2,000 and 4,000 years. It is 22 metres in circumference and 22 metres high. The tree has split into several massive trunks sharing the same roots. Declared a "monument to a culture of peace" by UNESCO, it owes its name to a legend. A queen of Aragon and her escort of one hundred knights were said to have taken shelter there during a storm. It appears in the 16th century in the writings of Pietro Carrera and was immortalised by the French painter Jean-Pierre Houël.
