The castle is also linked to the Andrássy family. Its origins probably date back to the 13th century. It is said to have served as a refuge for the Hungarian king Bela IV from the Turks. The king thanked the owners, the Bebek family, by giving them a lot of land around the castle, where they built a defensive rampart against the Turks. At the end of the 16th century, the castle came into the possession of the Andrássy family, who transformed it into a beautiful Renaissance residence in the mid-17th century, and renovated it in Baroque style in the 19th century after a fire. At the beginning of the 20th century, the Andrássy descendants turned the castle into a family museum. In the chapel, the mummy of Zsofia Seredy is displayed in a glass coffin. According to legend, her right hand is raised towards her son's heart to prevent him from committing parricide.
The castle has been closed for renovations since 2012 following a fire.
At the foot of the castle is the Art Nouveau mausoleum of two Counts Andrassý, František and Dionýz. This mausoleum is a unique monument of Art Nouveau architecture in Slovakia. It was built between 1903 and 1904 by Count Andrássy, the last male representative of his family branch.
