Founded in the early 16th century by Prince Djordje, the monastery of Krušedol became the seat of the Srem bishopric in the 16th century. It is known for its crypt where members of the Branković family as well as King Milan Obrenović are buried. The building was burned down by the Turks in 1716, after the defeat of Petrovaradin, but it retained its original structure. After a fire in 1716, the old frescoes were covered by oil paintings executed between 1751 and 1756, and where the influence of Russian and Western Baroque painting is evident.
