At 8 km, full is, to Romania, this Serbian monastery was built in the th century, but the name of its sponsor is unknown. According to legend, it was a monk from Hilandar who made it in 1225 but, more likely, his construction was financed by trader Jovan Branković.
During the first migrations of the Serbs of the late th century, Elvira was the episcopal headquarters of the Banat, while the first Serbian monasteries were érigeaient in southern Hungary. In 1716 and 1788 the monastery was destroyed by the Turks and soon reconstructed. It is interesting to more than one title: first, having been restored in the th century, it consists of two churches, one typical of medieval times, the other white and surmounted by a purely baroque bell. Then it is decorated with numerous murals executed at the same time, including works by Paja Jovanović. In addition to its two churches, the monastery consists of monastic buildings around a courtyard lined with classical style galleries.
