THE CASTLE OF LOUIS XI
15th century castle with 5 corner towers linked by curtain walls and a cellar with petanque courts.
Château d'Auxonne was built at the end of the 15th century by King Louis XI of France, who wanted to assert his authority over Burgundy, which had just become part of his kingdom. The château is a fine example of the evolution of defense systems in the late Middle Ages. There are 5 corner towers with thick walls to counter the firepower of the artillery, all linked by curtain walls and fitted with gunboats. The barracks, built by Vauban in the 17th century, are representative of the classical architecture associated with military needs.
