VELLORE STRONG
building overlooking the Patar River, used as a prison during the British occupation, a place of interest
This sixteenth century edifice overlooking the Patar River was the seat of the Vijayanagar Aravidu dynasty. Despite its imposing ramparts, its wide moat and its massive wall, the fort fell into the hands of the different dynasties or empires that succeeded each other in the region: Bijapur, Marathas, Moghuls and finally the British. This succession of rulers explains the construction of different religious buildings. The fort was used as a prison during the British occupation; Tipu Sultan's family was locked up there as well as the last king of Sri Lanka. Legend has it that the moat was home to 10,000 crocodiles at the time. Today, there are none left. You can go to the fortress with peace of mind.
Sri Jalagandeeswarar Temple. The majestic east-facing gopuram is typical of South Indian temples. Don't miss the beautiful carvings under its porch which reflect the delicacy and skill of local craftsmen. The temple was used as an arsenal during the military occupation.
Mosque. This one was built in the middle of the 18th century by the Nawab of Arcot. Curiously, the Archaeological Department prohibits Muslims from praying in the mosque while the temple and church are still in use.
Saint John Church. It was built in 1846 at the request of the governor of Madras. If the faithful continue to go there for the services, the church was never officially consecrated.

Le fort est un endroit historique, mais c'est aussi le lieu de rendez vous de tous les jeunes couples indiens, qui se cachent entre les recoins recoins du fort. Assez amusant de voir cette pudicité.
