BIG BALL
The highest peak in the Vosges mountains at 1,424 m, popular with hikers and skiers, and home to the Blue Devils monument
Are you ready to climb the highest peak in the Vosges mountains? The climb is well worth the detour, with breathtaking views awaiting experienced hikers at the summit! At 1,424 meters, the Grand Ballon is the highest peak in the Vosges mountains. It has been well known to hikers and skiers alike since the 19th century: with the advent of railroads in the surrounding valleys, the first tourists came from all over Europe to admire it or take on the Grand Ballon. At its summit stands the Diables bleus monument, erected on the initiative of the Club alpin français and the Club vosgien in tribute to the victims of the alpine hunter battalions engaged on the Vosges front during the First World War. Visitors will also be surprised to come across a strange spherical building, a civil aviation radar designed by Claude Vasconi in 1997. The Grand Ballon is also sometimes referred to as the Ballon de Guebwiller, in reference to the nearby town of the same name. The capital of the Florival region remains the ideal starting point for climbing the impressive summit. Hiking, mountain biking, snowshoeing and skiing in winter... for the more sporty, marcaire meals, tastings and cellar visits for the gourmets, there's something for everyone! In summer, many motorcyclists like to take the Route des Crêtes to the Grand Ballon. You'll appreciate the unspoilt flora and fauna, the peace and quiet and the verdant colors..
