ST. GEORGE'S MONASTERY IN YURYEV
A little outside the city is the monastery of Youriev. Perched above the Volkhov, it dominates the countryside and its bells reach several kilometres at the round. Once again, its peaceful silhouette at the edge of the river, as well as the monks'songs, reveal a sense of serenity and eternity. Belonging to the monastery founded by Yaroslav the Sage, the cathedral was built in 1119 by master Piotr, the first Russian architect to appear in the chronicles. The original frescoes were preserved only by fragments. Part of the iconostasis was transferred to Moscow after the revolution. The monastery is now returned to the diocese. It is mainly for his views on the surrounding countryside and, in the distance, on Novgorod and his Kremlin.
