The path of the Sun, also known as the Chemin, is a small trail in the middle of the green which runs along the sea at a height of 150 m and leads to the Rosa Luxembourg sanatorium, in Miskhor, 7 km further. This path was erected in Tsar Nikolas II to allow the Royal Family to walk along the beach. About 1,5 km from the palace of Livadia, you can reach a pergola from where you have a breathtaking view of the cliffs and the sea. This is what remains of the great palace of the emperor built in 1852 in Oreanda. One can also see the white walls of the most famous Crimean sanatorium, the Nyzhnaya Oreanda, which welcomed famous writers and Brezhnev, former President of the USSR. In 1837, Tsar Nicolas I built a magnificent palace, which burned in 1881. It is a cathedral that replaces it now. You will reach the golden beach in the direction of Mount Preston-Nikola. It owes its name to a legendary Turkish pirate who, it says, had the unfortunate habit of looting the inhabitants of the region. In the run-up to the Russian army, he would have loaded all his loot on a ship, but a storm would have surprised him and the boat would have sunk. The next morning, the beach was covered with gold and stolen jewellery. Jewels or not, this beach is now the cleanest in Yalta.
