Founded in 1033, this magnificent monastery, which was one of the first of rus Rus, was destroyed by Mongolian invasions in 1239 and rebuilt in the th and th centuries. It has the appearance of a fortress, with towers, enclosures and heavy portals. The church of the Transfiguration, the main church of the complex, was built from 1791 to 1796 on a project of Italian architect Giacomo Quarenghi, serving the Russian Imperial Court.
