HELLFIRE PASS
This site in Sai Yok is a section of the Death Railway, dug by Japanese prisoners to make way for a railroad line
The Hellfire Pass is a 4 km section of the Death Railway that prisoners of the Japanese dug out of an enormous rock mass to make way for the railroad. It is estimated that 100,000 POWs took part in this terrible work in appalling conditions, using rudimentary equipment, and that 16,000 men of various nationalities lost their lives. The line was intended to link Thailand to Burma. Every April 25, a commemorative ceremony is held at Hellfire Pass.
