PRAÇA DOS TRÊS PODERES
Square at the end of the main axis, housing the Palácio do Planalto, the Congresso Nacional and the Supreme Federal Court
Symbols of democracy according to the precepts of Montesquieu, in his eminent work De l'esprit des lois, the buildings of the three branches of government stand next to each other without touching. The three branches of government - executive, legislative and judicial - are grouped together in this 120 x 220 metre square at the end of the main axis: The Palácio do Planalto (the Palace of the President of the Republic), the Congresso Nacional and the Supreme Federal Court. Also on the square are the Panteão da Patria, a monument to the country's heroes; the Lucio Costa space, where you can admire a large model of the city; the Museu Historico, a small poetic space where texts on the construction of the capital are displayed on its white walls; and the 100-metre-high flagpole with its 286-square-metre flag! There are also some symbolic sculptures to appreciate: A Justiça (Justice) by Cesquiatti, the bust of Juscelino Kubitscheck in front of the Historical Museum, and the threadlike statue Os Candangos, by Bruno Giorgi, representing the pioneers of Brasília. To its right, the clothespin-shaped creation is a pigeon house! It's a nice place to take a walk in the early evening when the buildings light up.
To the east of the square is the Bosque dos Constituintes, a green space created in 2008. Its name reminds the citizens of an important moment for the country's democracy: the Constituent Assembly and the signing of the 1988 Constitution, written after a long period of dictatorship.
