AKROTIRI CLUB
Sea turtle rescue center. Volunteers (some from French-speaking countries) provide a short tour.
Created in 1994, this rescue center is run by Archelon (Αρχελών), Greece's Sea Turtle Protection Society. Every year, it takes in around 60 turtles caught in fishing nets: loggerhead (Caretta caretta), green (Chelonia mydas) and leatherback (Dermochelys coriacea) turtles. Volunteers (sometimes from French-speaking countries) provide a short tour. Alternatively, more in-depth, paying guided tours are available on site or at nesting sites in Crete, Zakynthos or the Peloponnese.
