GOLA DI GORROPU
Very impressive canyon with its rocky walls and pure spring water
With its rocky walls rising to 500 m, this canyon is a wonder of Sardinian nature and a must-see. This canyon is considered to be the largest in Europe and is really impressive.
To reach it you have to follow a mountain road for 1 hour from Urzulei and park your car at the Gorropu base camp, located between Urzulei and Orgosolo. There is an information centre opposite the car park and the guides will be happy to help you. We recommend a round trip by Jeep to the lower trail to the canyon. It takes 20 minutes by car to get there and then a 2 hour leisurely walk to the entrance of the canyon. The very steep canyons may seem impressive and difficult but rest assured by following the little green dots on the rocks, it is very doable. We have even seen mothers with their babies in prams doing it and young children climbing the rocks. Just bring a bottle of water and good walking shoes, and a small snack. Allow 45 minutes to complete the green section of the canyon, when the dots are yellow it is really difficult and reserved for the climbing pros as the rocks are steeper and more slippery too. Go back the way you came. When you are back at the entrance of the canyon, drink a few sips of water in the river: it is pure spring water and perfectly drinkable. You can also take the opportunity to fill your bottle.
