TEMPIO DI ANTAS
Temple of the Augustan period with a secret chamber and a statue of the god
The temple, which dates back to the time of Augustus and was rebuilt in the 3rd century, was built on a former Punic temple. It consists of Ionic columns and a pronaos, the vestibule of Greek temples. The adyton (courtyard of the Greek temples) is divided into two parts because it housed a secret chamber where only priests entered. Discovered in 1836 and rebuilt in 1967, the temple contains a mosaic and two basins for purification ceremonies. A statue of the god, whose finger was found, was placed in the structure.
