Taken from an ancient tale of fishermen, the Legend of Love continues to live on through a majestic and popular ceremony.
The story tells of the tragic death of Lorenzo and Maria on July 14, 1534. Arriving early to their love date, Lorenzo was attacked by pirates. From the rocks, Maria watched helplessly this terrible scene and saw the dying body of her beloved thrown into the water. In despair, she let herself fall into the sea.
Since then, this love has been celebrated every 14th of July. The bells of the church of Capoliveri announce the torch-lit retreat and the procession begins its way to the torch-lit beach of Innamorata.
