The Bataille Battle (13 December 1862) had to be for the Union only one step on the road to Richmond, the capital of Confederate. It pitted the North Virginia army, commanded by Southern Robert Lee, and Potomac army, led by Major General Ambrose Everett Burnside. This one, at the head of an army larger than that of his opponent, could take him no speed because he had to cross the river Rappahannock. What he could do only once the arrivés reinforcements arrived, led by General Stonewall Jackson. His men were decimate and more than 13 000 yankees were killed or injured against 500 on the côté side. This terrible human toll was a blow to the morale of the North.
