This is the best preserved battlefield in the park. On May 8, 1864, following the Battle of Wilderness, Lieutenant General Ulysses S. Grant, head of the army's turned, decided to bypass the enemy forces and seize the village of Spotsylvania. General Robert E. Lee anticipa and went to this strategic point the first. This was followed by fighting of a rare intensity. For 18 hours, troops on both sides exchanged fire almost at the end. Lee finally turned his men back, leaving a huge mass grave on the ground.
