MAGGIE L. WALKER NATIONAL HISTORIC SITE
A Jackson Ward, in this emblematic neighbourhood of African-American black culture and entrepreneurship emerging from the civil war and after the abolition of slavery, Maggie L. Walker's home was a national historic site. One can admire the entrepreneurial spirit of this Afro-American woman, who was born in slavery and despite a sedentary and sexist climate, succeeded in becoming the first woman to base and lead a bank in the United States. The St. Luke Penny Savings Bank, founded in 1903, 17 years before the vote was granted to women in the United States, consolidated over the years and now remains the oldest bank in the United States managed by African Americans.
There will also be evidence in the house of Maggie Lena Walker's commitment to women and civic rights for the black community.
