Site that became famous during the battle of New Orleans, home to a national cemetery for the remains of soldiers
This site became famous on January 8, 1815 during the Battle of New Orleans. General Andrew Jackson's army, aided by the men of the French buccaneer Jean Lafitte, prevailed over the outnumbered and over-trained British army. Thus, this victory quickly became the symbol of a new idea: American democracy triumphing over the nobility and aristocracy of old Europe. Next to the battlefield, the National Cemetery houses the remains of 14,000 soldiers from the various wars.
