ASHLAND, THE HENRY CLAY ESTATE
Henry Clay (1777-1852) was a famous speaker and an important statesman. Born in Virginia, he settled in Lexington in 1797 as a lawyer. Subsequently, he was alternately a senator, president of the House, secretary of state and three times presidential candidate. Although most of the 242 hectares of its «beloved Ashland» have now left their place in a residential area, about 8 hectares have been preserved as National Historic Landmark. " Ashland, The Henry Clay Estate "is an area that essentially includes an Italian style house of 18 pieces built for Henry Clay's son (the house where Clay lived from 1809 until his death was demolished in 1857). Some of the materials used in the new Ashland come from the old home.
