OLD WASHINGTON DISTRICT
This Washington of Kentucky was the first named in honour of President George Washington. The village was founded in 1786, a few years before the creation of the State, by a former Virginia soldier, Captain Thomas Marshall, and a Baptist steward. After its separation from Bourbon County in 1788, Washington became the seat of Mason County County, which comprised nearly a quarter of the future Kentucky area. In 1792, Kentucky was admitted into the Union as 15 th State, and much espérèrent while the prosperous little town with its 119 huts would become the capital of the United States… that was not the case. Time passed and Washington gradually became a quiet suburb of Maysville when the latter became the seat of Mason County in 1840. A guided tour of the historic district is regularly organized by Washington's Log Visitor's Center.
