Camp Nelson, established in 1863, was an important deposit of the Union, as well as a training camp for new soldiers and emancipated slaves in exchange for their recruitment during the war of Secession. The park is very extensive but has only one time structure to visit, Oliver Perry House or White House dating back to 1846 and is a museum. The Interpretive Center traces Fort Nelson's history and has a few replicas of the missing buildings. At 1 mile to the south, you can visit the Nelson National Cemetery Camp.
