Natural park whose star is the Aneto peak, one of the most representative areas of the Pyrenean high mountains
With an area of 33 267 hectares, this park was declared a natural park in 1994. The park star is undoubtedly the peak of Aneto, which, with its 3 404 m, is the culmination of the entire chain of the Pyrenees. There are many peaks over 3 000 metres and 95 glacial lakes. It is one of the most representative areas of the Pyrenees mountain, which has an important ecological, landscape and natural diversity. It covers the territories of the municipalities of Benasque, Gistaín, Montanuy, Sahún and San Juan de Plan. This Pyrenees cordillera sector is one of the main representatives of the ecosystems of the Iberian Peninsula, situated between 1 500 meters in the valley and 3 404 metres at the top of the Aneto. The glacial valleys (Estos, Eriste, Vallibierna, Gistain) are very moist, very rich in wood (pine, fir) and wild fauna. Bears, otters, isards, deer, deer, wild boar and raptors (royal eagle, vulture, bearded gypaète) live on these lands.
