A jewel of colonial architecture, the Saintonge building was erected in 1892 by Victor Raoulx, a great merchant and politician of the time. After several sales (notably to a Swiss widow with the short name of Magdeleine Merle de Brugière de Laveu-Coupet, or to the Austrian consul), the Saintonge was bought back by the city of Arue, which made it its City Hall in 1978. The Kaori, a large resinous tree that stands in the garden not far from the police station, is probably one of the oldest, if not the oldest, tree in Tahiti.

Deuxième mairie la plus intéressante sur tahiti, après celle de Papeete bien sûr. Elle est aussi dans un style colonial, mais très différente de celle de Papeete. Vaut donc le coup d'oeil.
